MEMBER NEWS: Exeter appoint Andrew Wiseman as their first full-time strength & Conditioning Coach

Exeter City’s new Strength and Conditioning coach Andrew Wiseman says he will be working hard to ensure as many City players as possible will be fit and available for selection next season.

In a summer of several new appointments, new manager Matt Taylor has added to his backroom staff by bringing in Andrew after proving a standout candidate whilst interviewing for the role.

Since graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University, Andrew has since worked with the likes of Charlton Athletic, Stevenage and the Celtic women’s side which also involved working alongside Brendan Rodgers’ staff in Scotland.

When asked what his role will involve at St James Park, he said: “I will be looking after the player’s pitch condition and their gym progress. It’s a good, young, side and I’ve heard a lot from Matt and some of the staff at the club. It’s a good core with a real development emphasis. From talking to Matt, I know that I will be working closely with the academy staff and help to integrate some of the younger players into the first team.”

With the League Two schedule known to prove somewhat of a physically challenging season with matches often taking place in midweek as well as weekends, Andrew revealed that he will be ensuring the players have the best opportunity possible to recover post-match.

He continued: “One of the things I looked at whilst researching the role here was the fixtures. They are intense in League Two, you’re playing Saturday and Tuesday almost every week.

“Recovery is crucial and for me it’s about having a look at the players. Every player is different so there is no real blanket approach and we know the benefits of sleep both physiologically and psychologically. It’s an interesting area but there are a lot of other facets that can influence that. For me, it’s about working with the players, I’m not there to work against them but to help them see that what we do in strength and conditioning is to benefit performance.”

Andrew was also keen to stress his excitement at starting the role and is excited to get going when he officially arrives with the Grecians on June 30.

“I found the interview process challenging.” Andrew said: “It made me look at my work previously, but I said to Matt and the other staff that when I came in the first time I felt a really good feeling about the club and where it wants to go. The emphasis on development is a huge thing for me, being part of a project is massive.”
