Sport, Medicine and the Law: Risk and Resilience (London)

Date: 12/02/2019
Location: 30 Euston Square, London, London, NW1 2FB

Capsticks, in association with Sempris and Paragon Insurance Brokers, is hosting this one day conference exploring sport medicine and the law.

As the commercial impact of elite sport has grown so too have the legal obligations and ethical dilemmas facing those who provide medical services to professional sportsmen and women. Litigation is relatively rare but when it does arise it can be costly on many levels and puts individuals, clubs and national governing bodies under microscopic scrutiny.

This conference is aimed at healthcare professionals, performance directors and sport scientists working in elite sport as well as those with legal responsibility within professional sports organisations. It will provide an overview of the medico legal landscape that has developed in recent years and provide practical advice on how good governance in medical teams and the organisations they operate in, can protect everyone from the athlete to the individual clinician and the wider organisation from mistakes and the potential litigation that may arise.

Key topics covered will include consent to treatment and providing athletes with medical information, concussion and return to play decisions, data sharing and GDPR obligations, effective communication and IT, duty of care in sport and risk management .

Confirmed speakers include:

Dr Michael Turner, CEO and Medical Director, at The International Concussion and Head Injury Research Foundation

Richard Booth, QC, 1 Crown Office Row Chambers

Dr James Brown, Benchmark54

Majid Hassan, Partner, Capsticks
