MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine

The SEM Masters programme is open to nationally and internationally qualified medical doctors, physiotherapists, osteopaths and podiatrists.

Learning objectives and course content align with competencies defined by the physiotherapy IFSP and medical FSEM. All students complete eight taught modules – three core multi-disciplinary, two professional route specific, and three optional modules (Podiatry and Biomechanics, Exercise Medicine and Physical Activity, Football Medicine, Dance Medicine, and Imaging in Sports Medicine) and a research project.

During the MSc, students must accrue 32 (half-day) multi-disciplinary clinical placements – with clinical learning opportunities, including monthly inter-disciplinary combined clinics, practical experience of elite sporting environments and development of clinical reasoning within leading sports medicine facilities provided.

Taught components of the course are delivered in lecture and practical formats across two semesters (Sept-Dec and Jan-Mar), over 1 to 4 years.  Sessions are presented by national and international experts; from cutting edge basic scientists to physiotherapists (e.g. Jon Fern, head physiotherapist Chelsea FC), doctors (e.g. Dr Ritan Mehta, Women’s Lead Performance Doctor, The FA) and other health professionals working with world-class athletes.

Overall, the design of the programme provides a comprehensive foundation from which students take forward their own specific and continued professional development in SEM.
